CEL on my 01 Sable was on yesterday and the reader pulls P0171 & P0174. Just did a through search, it seems a lot of people have the same problem and most of them fixed the problem by replacing UIM and LIM gasket. I did remove UIM before, so I know how to finish that part. However, last time I removed the UIM, I could not figure out how to LIM, which was my intent as well. I was puzzled by the fuel rails above LIM and am not sure how to handle them. Could somebody please lend a hand?

Also, annual inspection is due tomorrow. I am just wondering if I can pass the inspection by just removing the code. I tried to remove the code this afternoon. CEL went back on after 30 miles and 3 engine start-ups. I know I will fix this problem later, but just want to pass the inspection first and buy me some time to fix it later.

thanks

Sean

The fuel rail and injectors do not need to be removed from the LIM to remove the LIM from the heads. You need a quick-disconnect tool to disconnect the fuel line from the fuel rail. The fuel rail may have a sensor and/or vacuum line that needs to be removed. Other than that, each bank on the LIM is held down by 4 8mm bolts. Remove all 8 and the LIM should come out as a unit with both halves held together by the fuel rail and injectors.

Inspect the PCV hose elbow. It will collapse and split. Very common source of these two simultaneous codes.

The PCV valve elbow is often the cause of these lean codes on a DOHC. Do this before you mess with the LIM and UIM gaskets. Because you have the code on both banks, it is likely that it's something that's letting extra air in before the LIM and UIM gaskets...

The elbow hides so well under the UIM and I could not find a way to check it directly. While checking, I actually found the other hose next to the elbow off the UIM is cracked. Does anybody know what size it is and where can I buy a replacement?

Also, is there a way to check vaccum leak?

Yes, wiki has the information about the pcv hose set including the elbow. But the hose I need to replace is the one next to the pcv elbow off the UIM shown in the picture below. Does anybody know what size it is and where I can find it?

I'd have to look at the entire piece of hose to be sure, but you can probably make your own with a piece of 3/8" rubber hose. It's a vacuum line, but I can't remember where it runs.

Mine is a vulcan and I replaced the PCV elbow yesterday ( after reading several threads here about P0174 code) andr dealing with rough idle/ code P0174 for a couple of months. I would definately check this out next.

Good Luck!

For what it's worth, I spent about a year messing around with codes P0171/P0174 and various parts for my 2004 wagon; codes just kept coming back and it ran very rough on startup on cold days for a few minutes. Finally I took it to someone who ran what is called a smoke test and that clearly showed a hole in the upper intake manifold and a leak around the IAC gasket. Fixed those and the code hasn't come back.

Again, does anybody know what size this hose is? I ran over to the dealer and they could not figure it out either. Not becuase this is the only vehicle I have, I can take the hose off and take it to the dealer. Sigh.
