Are you looking for the engine serial number or the VIN that's supposed to be stamped on the block?

The engine serial number is on a label on the front valve cover (often obliterated or missing), on a label on the backside of the rear valve cover, and on a label on the transmission side of the front cylinder head. It'll be a 9-digit number broken up in threes (e.g. 450 100 544).

If it's the VIN stamping on the block, I've never found it on any Ford.

Here's a picture showing the label on the front valve cover, right below the oil cap:

The label is in roughly the same spot on the rear valve cover (it will be on the driver's side of the engine of course, and below the PCV valve). You'll probably need a mirror to see it, if not have to remove the valve cover entirely.

I see on the picture of your engine that there's a sticker on the intake manifold that looks about the right size to be the serial number label. What does it say?

Yes, that's right. I wish I had my spare set of heads and valve covers handy so I could get a good picture of it, but I don't.

On both '89 Taurii that I owned that had the dreaded 3.8L, I never was able to find any engine serial number label.

Here are the three engine number locations:

Okay, they won't embed into the post. vBulletin sucks.

The first picture is the front valve cover, the second is the rear valve cover.

The third is on the front cylinder head, on the driver's side.

If these labels are missing or illegible, you don't have an engine serial number anymore.
