hey, we have a 2000 Mercury Sable that has recently started giving us some problems. A few days ago, the car would idle very roughly on startup, but not stall. after about 10 minutes the idle would return to normal and the car would be fine. If the car is off for a while and i start it again, I have the same problem. After a few days, the check engine light came on and the problem is still persisting. Any idea what this could be? I read a few places it could be a bunch of sensors, dirty intake manifold, bad intake gasket, or just a leaky vacuum line. How can i diagnose the problem? Where is the most common place to look for this sort of problem? thanks

Welcome to TCCA. First, we need to know what engine you have. Pop the hood...does it look like either of these two engines?

How many miles are on it? Have you performed any maintenance on it?

If you have an AutoZone near you, bring the car to them and ask to have the check engine light codes read and report back to us with the codes. If you want to by a check engine light code checker, Harbor Freight sells one for about $40.

haha, read my mind. just got back from autozone and its code p0306 - cylinder 6 misfire. its the duratec engine, has only about 40k miles on it and have performed the normal maintenance but nothing extensive.

Take the COP (coil on plug) from cylinder 6 (nice and easy, it's right up front) and swap it with another one that is easy to get to. See if the misfire follows with the COP or stays with cylinder 6.

I am having a similar problem with my 2001 duratec. It's throwing a P0304 code. That means my #4 is misfiring & yours is #6. So far I changed a lot without any luck. I thought it was a plug & wire problem being that they are the original with 85K. Next I put in a new injector, coil, pcv with new rubber elbow & upper & lower intake manifold gaskets. Problem still there. It looks like I may have a valve hanging up. I am going to take a compression test and to confirm a #4 cyl. problem.
I'll post the outcome if and when it's resolved. You may be having similar issues but with 40K I'd expect you have a simpler problem like a bad wire or coil. Good luck.
Also, I am assuming that a bad o2 sensor would throw a different code and not one specific to a single cylinder. I wonder if I am wrong and the o2 needs to be replaced?

An O2 will not throw a misfire code.

Someone had suggested to me it might be the #6 coil pack which are prone to go bad on these cars, so I went out and bought one to see if that was the problem. After waiting a few hours for the engine to get cold again, I started it up and the problem was still there. Any other ideas what it could be?

If a new coil didn't fix it (hopefully you can return it), next it would be worth checking the spark plug on cylinder 6.

Do a compression check and while you are there swap plugs.
