Well, after reading up on the infamous water leak into the passenger floor compartment, I started checking our 4 Tauri and will check my parent's car next week.

My 03 had a small leak
my wife's 01 had no leak
my son's 02 had a major leak
my daughter's 98 has a major problem ( pic to follow)

Thanks to Nidan's suggestion in an earlier post, I used silicon caulk all around the ac drain tube area by the firewall yesterday and had time to do the heavy water test on my the 02 and 03 tonight ( I'll check the 01 tomorrow).
So far, no water leaks !!! (I hope I don't jinx myself!!)

A big thank you again to Nidan!!

Now for the 98 problem;

I never thought to check my daughters car (95,000 miles) and when I checked it tonight, this is what I saw:

[attachmentid=26827]

There are 3 holes that rusted thru the floorboard and one right over the frame rail. The rail seems OK.

Could someone identify the tubing seen in the picture? I didn't have time tonight to crawl under the car.

Any ideas on how to repair this area, as my daughter was hoping to keep the car awhile??

I want it to be safe for her to drive and keep any fumes out of the car.

And please everyone, take the time to check the passenger floorboard so this doesn't happen to you!!

I would say you'd have to cut that peice out and weld a new one in.

Checked my 03 drivers side today and had a leak also!!

It was in a small section under where the large wire harness splits into the door and the rest go under the dash.
What a pain it was to find and a pain to silicon.
I'm letting it dry tonight and will give the car the water test tomorrow.

Keepin my fingers crossed!!

I have made some "ghetto fixes" on some older cars I have owned that worked good. What you need to do is use a rust "converter" paint and paint the complete area around the floor board both inside and under. Then fit a sheet of aluminum or steel in the floor pan area larger than the rusted area from the inside. Next step is to use a couple tubes of RTV silicone sealer on the floor pan and place the new metal panel ontop and press it down. I have also fastened these panels with sheet metal screws ( be sure you dont screw into a wire harnes or fuel / brake lines below) to help hold the panel in place. If you take some time doing this, it will seal very well and also when the carpet is over it you will never know its been done.

Re rust "converter" paint, I have not been impressed by Extend and other similar latex-based products. Best stuff I have found to use is this: http://www.por15.com/products.asp?dept=1

JC Whitney sells, or used to sell, what appeared to be the same stuff in clear, black or silver in a generic container that was somewhat cheaper...

Surprisingly, My '02 has no leaks only because it already had some blackish silicone in the rainhat area. My dad's 04 has been leaking and the reason how the blower resister went. After replacement I replaced the cabin filter and silicone the hell out of the rainhat/rectangular area. It stopped the leak.....for now.

Tested the drivers side on the 03 today for leaks and it looks like the silicon did the trick.
So I have the 01, 02 and 03 finished.
3 cars down, two to go (my daughter's 98 and my parents 00).

I placed the silicon around the outside ac drain by the firewall on my daughters 98.
I'm checking her drivers side floorboards tomorrow (hopefully its better than the passenger's side was).
Then comes the water test. I want to make sure there aren't any more water leaks before the floorboard is repaired.

Then I'm off to check my parent's 00 Taurus for any leaking/floorboard problems.

Ah, the joy of car ownership!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cliff, be sure to check both driver and passenger floorboards. My 03 had a leak on the drivers side that showed up fast with the water test.
