Hey
So I just got my taurus last week and it only came with one key and remote... I figured no big deal for a spare ill go to wal mart and make a copy.........wrong the spare key works on everything except to start the car......so back it goes for my 2 dollars ![]() After looking all over here i realize now that there is a "chip" in my key?? Im all ready looking on ebay and i see a few keys however to program it they say I need Both of my orginal keys.... is this true or can i simply repeat the steps with the same key twice...... I dont have the code key yet...im going to call the ford dealer tommrow just to see what they say but im sure its going to be lots of $$$ |

What does the dealer do to program a new key to make it so special?
Can you disable the theft system so any cut key works? thx |

Is your key big and fat? If yes you have PATS in your car. Luckily you can program your own key (even with one) on the 96-97 year cars.

There is a way to use regular keys, but the pats system would still be functional. You would have to use an alarm pats bypass and put your programmed key in the box. I had my key programmed for ~$35, as long as you have 2 you can program your own.

I called ford and to get a second key working its 150 dollars....
Ouch.......so for now Im going to becarefull and not loose that key.... (im going to keep the walmart key for now so it can be a template) I also checked out the fuse panel and the PATS and Airbags are on the same fuse sooo id rather not try to save money and get a facefull of glass to save a key.... |

Find a locksmith that will program the second key for you. They average $45 or so. After you have 2 programmed keys, you can program them yourself. That seller is an excellent one. I've bought 6 keys from him.

Even if you pull the fuse, the car won't start by default.
