Hi all, I'm new to the forum but need advice. I have a '96 Ford Taurus that first developed a slow oil leak. Now, I put in one quart last night and this morning, only a tiny, tiny amount showed on the dipstick. After driving to church, none showed up on the dipstick. What is the likely cause of such a fast leak and how expensive is it likely to be to repair? I'm mucho low on funds right now, having just moved. With the cost of gas I'm thinking of walking the six miles to work...

The cause of a fast leak, could be a massive oil leak. just kidding.

But seriously, we need to know more about the car to diagnose. If you have an oil leak, I would imagine you have the standard 12 Valve engine we refer to as the vulcan. These are known to have oil pan leaks. some users have had several different taurus and they all develop a leak.

If you just look under the car, going through that much oil, i would imagine you can see its wet somewhere.

Another thing to consider is this, when you are driving, do you see any blue smoke behind you? When you are stopped, and you take off, do you see a cloud of blue smoke?

No, no blue smoke. It seems to be leaking toward the very front of the car. Haven't found the exact spot yet. Is it likely to be expensive to fix...?

It is hard to say. We still need to know which engine your car has.

Check near the oil filter, maybe the filter is not on tight as well as the oil pan bolt.
