Hello
I have a 1997 GL 4 door Taurus. When I got the car a month ago I didnt realize that I could not open the trunk with the Key.
I do have a electric trunk button but If im carrying a handfull of groceries I have to throw them in the parking lot and open the drivers door and then pop the trunk its not a big deal but it is a pain in the ass....

I went to the wreckers and I though I would just take the locking cylinder and another key and simply have 2 keys for the car, one for the ignition and one for the trunk....however all of the ones in the wreckers are wagons and they seem to have a different push button system that I could not figure out...

So my question is, can I take the cylinder off and somehow get it to work with the orginal key??

It does not look like it was ever abused or broken into so I think it just might need to be programed.....

When I bought my car it came with two keys, thing is one key works on the doors and the other for the ignition. The lock on the fuel door and trunk latches can't be opened because nethier key works. Also I cannot access my trunk through the key slot or lock the glovebox. Maybe someone could elaborate on this?

It's pretty common for the trunk lock on the Gen 3's to quit working. They don't get used enough and seize up. Squirt some penetrating oil in there, work the key in and out, and keep trying to turn the lock. DO NOT force it. Eventually, it should loosen up and start working again.

It's especially common on the V8 SHOs. They have the keyless entry, trunk button, and code buttons on the driver's door to unlock the trunk. The key lock never gets used.

G2s come with two keys, but the square key works in both the doors and ignition while the round key works in the trunk, glovebox, and lever lock. If you need to use a separate key for the doors and ignition, something's wrong (ignition was probably replaced at one time).

To add to what spridget mentioned, I had the same issue. I used a can of rust cure (all I had at the time). spray a fair amount into the lock and then tried it. Nothing. I ended up removing the plastic cover on the trunk lid and using a hammer to hit the back of the tumbler while turning the key. It freed up, and haven't had a problem since.

I have the black ford key that opens the door but yes there is a different key for starting the car. I never recieved a round key when I bought it. Also your right there is a different ignition in there.

I've gone through half a can of liquid wrench trying to get my trunk lock to work again and it's just not happening. I don't use the trunk to often though, so I'm alright with just using the button. The car may become an enduro after I get out of school anyway.

Get a locksmith to make you a key for the trunk. The dealer won't be able to make a key from your VIN because of it's age.

The round key has a different shape and length than the square key so you won't be able to even fit a door/ignition key into the trunk/glovebox.
