We still need more info. Just a smell coming from the heater isn't enough. Could be a number of fluids from under the hood. Trans fluid, motor oil, coolant, power steering, etc. Can you describe the smell? If you pop your hood can you seem anywhere that is wet from a leak?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Have you noticed any loss of coolant. I was thinking of your heater core possibly leaking if there is no visible leaks. But that shouldn't smell like oil. Are you sure there is no oil leaking around the rear of the motor, between the firewall and motor.

Be sure to take a look at the passenger side transmission output shaft seal (where the cv shaft goes into the transmission). This seal leaked on both our '99 and '00. When this happens it'll drip right onto the catalytic converter there, where it'll burn off and give you that smell. Could certainly be many other causes, but this is one to check.

A 96 Taurus WITHOUT an oil pan gasket leak! How could such a thing be?

I've had the fluid flushed at least 3 times with my 97, and it looks brownish again before long too. The problem is all the crud in the resovoir. Unless you remove it and clean it out and then re-install, it will just dirty up your new coolant. Do you have a wet pass side carpet? Run your fingers thru it to feel for slippery anti-freeze.

Do you have a vulcan or duratec?

We had an oil leak in the 'tec for a while, there was some kind of bolt in the block that provided access to an oil galley that worked its way loose. All of the oil dripped onto the front Y-pipe. It was so bad that when you came to a stop it looked like the car was on fire from all the oil smoke!

Put the car up on ramps and see what you can see.

Unpossible! It's either oil or trans fluid getting onto the exhaust. (Mine is trans fluid)
