Digits 1, 2 and 3: World Manufacturer identifier
Digit 4: restraint system
Digit 5: manufacturer's specification
Digits 6 and 7: Line, series and body type
Digit 8: Engine type
Digit 9: check digit
Digit 10: Vehicle model year
Digit 11: assembly plant
Digits 12 through 17: Production sequence number


Engine series:

2: 3.0 (OHV) (ethanol version)
U: 3.0 (OHV)
S: 3.0 (DOHC)
1: 3.0 (OHV) (methanol version)
N: 3.4 (DOHC) SHO

Digit 4: Restraint System

Digits 6 and 7: Line, series and body type
Digit 8: Engine type
Digit 9: check digit
Digit 10: Vehicle model year

Digit 1 (Country of Manufacture)

1= USA
2=Canada
3= Mexico
4= USA
5=USA


Digit 2 (Manufacturer Make)
F= Ford
L= Lincoln
M=Mercury
Z= Ford (International)


Digit 3 (Vehicle Type)

1= Limousine
2= MPV
A= Passenger Car
B= Bus
C= Basic (Stripped Chasis)
D= Incomplete Vehicle
E= Passenger Vehicle
H= Incomplete Vehicle

F= Active Belts at all Seating Locations and Front Driver and Passenger Air Bags
H= Same as Above Plus Side Airbags, Curtons or Canopies


Digit 5 (Passenger Car Identifiers)

P= Ford
M= Mercury -or- Lincoln
T= Passenger Cars Imported From outside North America and Non-Ford Cars Built For Ford
