Default What's the Gas Tank Size?

Hello.

So, I have the 24V 1999 Ford Taurus. I have a simple question about the tank: how many gallons does it hold? I've heard 16, but when my fuel gauge is a bit below 1/4, it only takes ~10 gallons...do I have a 12-gallon tank, or is the meter just way off?

Thanks.

16 gallon tank on a 99 DOHC.

Fuel gauge accuracy leaves a lot to be desired on the Taurus....

At least by '01 the Sables had 18.

Still, my '01 and '03 gages show near flat empty and never take more than 15 when the light comes on.

Gas gages are noted for not accuracy.
On my '96 Lincoln I had them replace the sending unit as it showed E and 0 miles to empty and took only 15 to fill. The new unit fixed that.

Yea Ford finally got wise, and put 18 gallons in the very very late built 2000s and all 01+s. Prior to that all the 96-most 2000s have a 16 gallon, except FFV models.

Same problem as the OP in my Taurus; light comes on after around 10gal have been used and I'll actually stall out after using around 14gal (on a straight road) in spite of the fact that I should still have more than a gallon left at that point.

So realistically I have to treat my Taurus as a car with a 13gal tank.

I have a 2000 FFV and it's only 16 when the book says 18. How do I know? I ran it dry before on accident and that's what it took to fill.

I know when my light comes on I have roughly 3 gals left and it normally always takes 13 to refill. But that's back when I actually could afford to put a whole tank of gas.

If I remember correctly from reading Car, the decision to reduce the size of the fuel tank was a very last minute thing and it had either to do with shaving a very miniscule amount of weight or saving a very miniscule amount of money to meet a target.
