I am wondering, which Taurus generation has the least reliable transmission? As my sig says, I want to get a Taurus when I get my license, but my main scare will be the transmission frying itself, which the Taurus is legendary for. I have my heart set on a SE Sport, but if it has a very unreliable transmission, I will look for another generation. So, which Taurus has the worst transmission as in most prone to frying itself?

From what I hear, both Gen1, 2, and 3 have the horrible transmissions. That's what really makes me worried, because I really want a Gen2 as my first Taurus.
I think the one with least problems is called AXOD-S or something like that, though.

they all have crappy trannies....go with a g4 because they are at ax4n which is the least crappy...(ill confirm it)
plus for reliability, go with a g1/g2 SHO or g3/g4 any. the 3.8 essex engines blow headgaskets like a tea pot. for the g3/g4, don't go ax4s......ax4n are a tad better For engine, yamaha 3.0 or 3.2 in the first SHOs or the vulcan/tec/Yamaha 3.4 in the later gens are good

G2 for sure. My '94 had the AXOD-E with the aluminum front piston. Worst-shifting vehicle in my experience... you had to wait 3 seconds at the end of a freeway ramp for it to get back to 1st, and too bad if you arrived at a red light just as it changed to green - the whole Northeast driving world would lay on its horn while you got down to 1st. Then, 2nd to 3rd shift point was random.
The mostly-mechanical AXOD in my '91 was pretty fine, if you ignore the leaks. My current '98 AX4N is the best-shifting tranny in my experience, and I learned to drive on a '58 V8 Olds 98 with Jetaway Hydramatic, a fabulous engine/transmission combination.

Well, I am less worried about how well the transmission peforms, and more about how prone to frying itself it is.

AX4N, which engine does that come with. As far as I know, each engine got a different Transmission on the G4

all the duratecs and some of the vulcans
edit: sorry, the ax4n is in all of the duratecs and most of the vulcans. the ax4s was used in some of the vulcans but was phased out by 2003. personally, your best bet is a 2005 SEL...you get the tec + all options and what not oh, for reference: http://www.taurusclub.com/encycloped...ine/Trans.html
