I have the original speakers from my MACH factory equipped 05 in the basement. When I upgraded the standard RCU to the MACH RCU in the wifes 04 a few years ago, I compared the old speakers from the factory Mach 05 to the ones in the wifes 04. They were identical.

The regular speakers do not have the wiring and the black cylinder running from side to side.

With all the tape you can't make a definitive determination of what the 'cylinder' is. It could be either a capacitor or an inductor. If a capacitor, then it's acting as a bass blocker to remove some of the low frequencies from the woofer. It's inline with the woofer, since the incoming power comes in on the opposite side from the woofer voice coil. This jives with your description of less bass and more clarity. More logical would be an inductor, which would roll off the high frequencies to allow a better match with the tweeter. But quite often, lower end speakers, especially paper cones, tend to have a benign high end rolloff and often don't really even need a crossover on the upper end. And if the woofers are excursion limited under Mach power, it would make sense to filter out some of the bass.
