Default Blacked Out Tail Lights

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forums, figured i would break myself in with a post about my new Taurus. Currently i own a 1996 and a 1997 Ford Taurus. The one i just purchased i wanna do some extra work to, since i will be driving it from Boston to Pennsylvania once a month. Mostly Aesthetic stuff, headlights, Tail lights, Tint, Stereo etc.

So here's my first of many questions.

I bought an HID kit which should be arriving anytime now, but i wanted to black out the rear brake lights. Is it illegal to do this? And even if it is illegal, so cops even bother? or has anyone every had issues with being pulled over because of the blacked out Tail Lights?

Welcome to the site. Me personally, I would not do anything to my tails since I don't care for the look.

Take a look at some previous threads on it. Basically my advice to you is this... if you want to change the taillights, smoking them is the best way to go. It gives a slightly different appearance, without taking away transparency. Blacking them out angers a lot of drivers because it is hard, especially in bright sun to see the brake lights. To each their own.

Most states tinting the tails is illegal. Some I think go my light output so if you tint them and put LED's in the stock bulb's place(of course with the resisters to make them not blink like a madman) that might be acceptable. Best thing is to ask in your state to see what the deal is. I know in NJ you can't tint the tails.

I agree with Paul on the tail light tinting, while I had completely blacked out lights at one point I was pulled over a couple times and warned they were too dark.
This is what I had

This is now lightly smoked

Thanks for the info guys. I was going to go fully smoked like the top pic, but i will probably go lightly smoked like your bottom one. Just for the simple not wanting to get pulled over factor lol.

I just figured the Black light on dark green Taurus would look good.

I agree on the looks I loved my black lights but I was sick of being pulled over or worrying about it... I mostly did it because my window tint is illegal and the less attention I can get from cops the better.

Needs to be visible from 100 feet or something of that nature.

As long as you use VHT Nightshade. You'll be fine!!!!

I live in Pennsylvania and I am pretty sure it is illegal to blacken any of the lights, but here's what mine look like and I have never had any problem with them.

^thats just cause they think it looks sexy! Their police taurus's cant match

Yeah, I'd say some tint, but anything darker than above, it gets a bit..."ricey", not to mention annoying as hell for others.

I got pulled over in NJ for 100% STOCK taillights in my 90 Beretta cause the cop was an and didnt know they were tinted from the factory.. Really it just comes down to who is behind the badge and what mood they are in when you drive by them.

This was my car
