Default Gen 4.5 Taillights

How hard is it to install gen 4.5 taillights with the amber turn signals in my car? I have a pair at the JY, and am wondering if I should pick them up.

Is it simple, or not so simple? Thanks! I've heard its simple on a taurus, not sure if its the same on the sable.

In a 2000-2003 Mercury Sable, I am 99% sure that the wiring for the tails is the exact same setup as the 2000-2007 Taurus.

I know I talked to you about this, BUT I'll post this here for others in the future. There is a writeup on adding Ambers to a Taurus, which I did in fact do. Cool little mod for Taurus owners. Anyways, you need to wire in the socket to accept the turn signal bulb and of course create a ground for it. Next (this is easier for 2000-01) you need to run a decent sized wire from your third brake light to the original socket so that those Illuminate when you press the brake pedal. Lastly, you need to locate a wire underneath the dash so that the turn signal and brake lights work independently, as you will find before you snip this wire, your turn signals will work, but if you hit the brakes, you get both amber and red lights. Cutting this will stop the signal going from the BOO (Brake On/Off) switch to the turn signal making them legal.

Now I have seen these added on a 2000 Mercury Sable so it is my guess they will bolt up no problem. The reverse light socket hole may need slight modification as it does if someone adds 2004-2007 Taurus tails to a 2000-2003 Taurus. Other than that, I don't see how it won't work with a little time.

An alternative idea I am toying with is going with backup lights in both spots and good led bulbs in both places. I have a set of the really good led bulbs in the backup lights of my impala and love them. I have a LED flasher here that is going to get hooked up to them shortly.

That is an interesting idea. You would just have to run a wire from the current reversers assuming they are being sent enough power.

My backup light is adequate, but more would be welcomed. You would have to get rid of the amber though.

No amber to get rid of...There is no amber on the housing itself. Just the bulb.
