Default Temperature Blend Door Actuator

Our 2008 Taurus SEL with 150,000 miles is making a thump, thump, thump noise coming from the dash during initial starting - suspect that this is coming from the air handling actuator. Suspect that this is a motor driven actuator -- or could the thumping sound be coming from the damper -- is ther a spring to dampen the damper? or vacuume line to control?

Suggestions on how to trouble shoot and how to access: we have experience with heater issues - had to rework the heater system in our 1999 with 306,000 miles - vulcan engine still running great.

One of the plastic gears inside of the blend door actuator probably broke (mine did and had the same noise).
You need to replace that with an original Ford one.
That That
will work.

I had this problem on my '09 but it did it when I turned the climate control system off (about 5 seconds of fast clicking/thumping).

I took it to the dealer. They said it was the motor behind the glove box and it was real easy to get to. Cost me $50. If I had known it would be easy I would have done it myself to save some money. I read another thread about this recently and the guy did it himself so he only paid about $20 for the part. So if your problem is the actuator behind the glove box, it should be easy to do yourself.

Thanks for the comments - any sites, links, exploited views showing how to remove the dask for the 2008? Replacing the heater core in the 1999 was not a big problem - but I'm not seeing how to remove the 2008 dash? Thanks

If it is the motor on the passenger side, and if an '08 is the same as an '09 (and I would think it is) then I do not believe you should have to remove the dash.

No dash dis-assembly required. Cant give directions unless you know which one is bad. You have:
--temperature blend door LH,
--temperature blend door RH( i think only on dual zone),
--Mode door actuator Defrost/Panel/Floor, and
--Air inlet Actuator. Fresh/Recirc
can you make it do the noise and how. what doesnt work right?

Sounds as if the tap, tap, tap is coming from an area directly behind the speedometer: after starting the engine I can run the temperature up and then down with the ac on: dampers divert the air from from the dash vents to the windshield dash area. Going from high teperature to low -- damper diverts air discharge: as it transitions from high temp setting to low - thats when you here the thump, thump, thump -- no noise going from low to high temperature adjustment.

Removal and Installation

NOTE: The LH temperature blend door actuator can be accessed from below the LH side of the instrument panel.
  1. Remove the 2 LH temperature blend door actuator screws.
  1. Disconnect the LH temperature blend door actuator electrical connector.
  1. Remove the LH temperature blend door actuator.
  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
I had mine replaced for 50 bucks and that was including parts and labor so it should be easy

Great -- Thanks TaurusBear for the image: I was going to insert a photo of the dash with notes where the noise was coming from: can you share how you insert the image: When I went to insert the site called for the URL address: do you have to post to a web page and then insert or is there a way to xc and paste?

Thanks again for your time and info: suspect that there must be a worn plastic gear that when the actuator moves the damper that there is play with the worn gear that lets the damper bounce creating the thump, thump, thump.
