My 99 Taurus SE Wagon with 24v DOHC Duratec engine has a very peculiar problem. In the morning, it won't start. No matter how long or often I crank it, it won't go. I tease the accelaretor and it kicks over as if wanting to start, but can't make it. Even holding the accelerator to the metal, teasing, or anything I try, it won't go. Even keeping the bafle slightly open in the air intake with a steel rod doesn't cut it. Then I raise the open air intake up high and spray a little gas into it and while it is still open, I crank it and it starts right away with a little rattling of the bafle opening and closing at rapid frequency 2 or 3 times. Then, I shut everything down, go off to work and at any time in the day or even if I only start it again 12 or 14 hours later to go home, it starts ok considering it's 10.5 years and 111,000 miles (178,000 Km). I had it at a Ford dealer, and they want to change the DPFE ($200.00) and the gas pump ($850.00).
The car is probably not worth these repair costs. Aside from value considerations, I can't believe the fuel pump needs replacement. Once started in the morning, it's good all day. I have not had a single symptom to hint at a weak or defective pump. Once I get going to work in the morning, it runs just great like it did all these years. We drive short or long (120 miles + ) distances without any problems. It cruises very steady at 120Km/H (75 MPH) staying at 2650 RPM and has plenty left to give for the odd sprint passing trucks or unsteady drivers...
It sounds more to me like some little sensor not letting gas get through like from a dirty air filter or something. I've ordered a MOTORCRAFT DPFE from Accurate Diesel.com / Accurate Technical Services, LLC ($57.00 delivered) but I'm NOT rushing into the pump.
ANY THOUGHTS ? I KNOW ONLY ENOUGH ABOUT CARS TO BE DANGEROUS. HELP ! ? THANKS

Start with the DPFE, it could be that. Post this in the maintenance thread. You might get more hits. And hit up the search or the topic finder and see if you find anything.
