What do you guys think of a Mustang based Mercury Cougar XR7? This concept was posted on one of the other forums I am on. I could imagine a Mustang with upgraded interior (for comfort), chrome on the inside, 20" chrome wheels, hide-away square headlights, Ecoboost 3.5L or Boss 5.0L engine choices. Keep the production numbers low to make it more exclusive. This would be perfect to go against some of the CTS coupe that is coming out. I love seeing that Cougar emblem on the front.

What do you think? I think its time for the personal coupe to come back.

How recent is that? I seem to recall a Cougar concept like that from a while back.

Sure it'd be cool but I doubt they'll make anything that could take sales away from the Mustang.

IIRC, that was called the Mercury Messenger (it was S-197 Mustang-based). Not the same car as above, but either concept would make an awesome halo car for Mercury. Question is, is there a solid enough segment for "personal luxury coupes"? FMC isn't going to jump back into the days of loss-leader models again. If it won't sell profitably, they won't touch it.

That is the problem with Ford, nothing can have more performance then the Mustang. While the Mustang is good, this Cougar would be for a whole other group of buyers that demand comfort, smooth ride, ect. Weight would be way up, but it would have enough HP to get it moving. The Mark VIII was about as fast as the Mustang at one time, I would think this would fall into the same catagory.

I am not sure when this concept was made, it might be older, but this was the first I had seen of it.

This is the Mercury Messager from 2003:

That's been an increasingly small group of buyers... people generally don't want personal luxury cars anymore and those that do tend to want cars in a much higher price range. Lincoln might be able to pull off a Mark IX in a few years (whoops, it has to be three letters... uh... MKN?) but it'll probably be just a two-door MKS with some tacky styling additions. Everyone seems to be afraid of RWD now.

I doubt they're worried about making something with performance on par with the Mustang. People buy Mustangs because they're Mustangs, and performance buyers aren't looking for an extra 500+ lbs of creature comforts. Most people seem to want a stripped-down version available.

The Messenger looks nice... I'll hold my thoughts on that Cougar concept. I'd like to see one but I don't think it'll happen, especially since it's very possible that Mercury has only a couple years left to live.

I like the idea of a softer Mustang-based sports coupe / tourer... not necessarily the one shown above though. Mercury could use some brand image improvements.

I'd like to see something become of this, if Mercury isn't murdered (or commits suicide) first.

I know that's just a concept, but it's ugly!! But the overall idea is a good one.. go back to the roots as they did with the mustang. But instead of a V-8, make the Ecoboost the top engine, and the n/a 3.5L the base engine
